Sarah Childers Member Profile

  1. How long have you been a member of OFA?
I recently joined about one month ago. I am excited to be a member of an outstanding organization!
  2. Why did you join OFA?
I joined OFA for the networking and to learn about various topics related to advertising.
  3. What's your favorite smell?
I have two favorite smells. I like the fresh smell of rain and also the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven.
  4. If you were a candy, what kind would you be?
I would be a Whatchamacallit candy bar because it has peanut butter and caramel combined together and dipped in chocolate. Plus, you can call the candy bar anything you want!

  5. If a song were to describe you, what song would it be?
It would have to be the song "Sarah" by Fleetwood Mac. I remember my parents playing this song on the stereo when I was a little and I couldn't believe I had a song with my name in it!
  6. Do you remember your dreams?                                                           I
I remember most dreams. If I have interesting or adventurous dreams, I try to remember them right when I wake up so I can share them with others. I once had a dream about a bunch of spiders being in the same room with me and I woke up and everything was okay (spiders are insects that I fear most). Thank goodness that wasn't real!
  7. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
I would definitely choose Europe where I could explore London, Paris and Rome. I would love to live in many different European cities because many great artists (Van Gogh, Picasso, Degas, etc.) lived in these areas and impacted many different art movements in Europe and around the world.
  8. If you could change something about your home, without worry about expense or mess, what would you do?
I love being outside, so I would put up a gazebo with a hammock and relax to the sounds of nature. A garden would be another thing I would add, along with a swimming pool that I could relax in on hot summer days.
  9. What inspires you?
Music, art history, viewing other design/marketing work and reading books about various topics inspire me to achieve goals that are beyond my own expectations. I also become inspired when I relax and spend time with my family.
  10. What's the greatest accomplishment in your life so far (personal or professional-you choose)?
My greatest accomplishment in my life so far is graduating from college and being able to use my graphic design and marketing skills daily at Coldwell Banker Commercial World Group. I am determined and very motivated to excel in my marketing and design work, and I believe many influential people in my life have led me to where I am today.

OFA AdBites: Launching Pop Culture

Regency Lodge
June 16, 2009
11:30 a.m. - Networking
Noon - Luncheon & Program

For well over half a century, people have been brought together by the power of television. From The Dick Van Dyke Show, Happy Days and M.A.S.H., to Dancing with the Stars, LOST and Grey's Anatomy, TV not only offers an escape from the everyday, but also plays an important role in shaping trends and impacting pop culture.  But where and how does it all start?  Without innovative, integrated marketing plans to help spread the word, today's hits may have amounted to nothing more than one season memories.  Jenny Whitlock, Director, Marketing Strategy& Research at ABC, will share insights into what it takes to break through in a competitive landscape and the importance of understanding and embracing emerging technology for your marketing initiatives.

Jenny Whitlock has spent the past nine years working in marketing and advertising, seven of which have been with the Walt Disney Company. While working for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, she directed campaigns to launch a number of attractions and events, as well as led efforts for the multi-year Where Dreams Come True campaign and The Year of a Million Dreams celebration. She is currently Director of Marketing Strategy and Research at ABC, responsible for all related efforts for primetime programming, including such shows as Grey's Anatomy, LOST, and Dancing with the Stars.  Jenny also leads franchise management and CRM initiatives for the ABC Entertainment Group.

To: AAF Members
From: Clark Rector, Executive Vice President-Government Affairs
Re: Tobacco Advertising Legislation

As you probably know by now, last week was a sad time for anyone who cherishes the First Amendment and its protections for commercial speech.

The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have passed legislation giving the FDA authority to regulate tobacco products and the advertising of those products. The measure is being sent to President Obama and he has said he intends to sign it into law when it reaches his desk.

While AAF took no position on much of the legislation, we did strenuously object to the provisions regarding advertising. These include:

         · Banning outdoor tobacco advertising within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds,

         · Requiring all tobacco advertising to be black text on a white background, except in magazines, newspapers or periodicals with adult readership of 85 percent or more or fewer than two million readers under the age of 18.

The issue is not just the advertising of tobacco, but the advertising of any product that a member of Congress deems is not worthy of First Amendment protection. The list of potential targets is virtually endless - alcoholic beverages, lotteries and casinos, "unhealthy" foods and beverages, automobiles that do not meet proscribed emission of mileage standards, "unsafe" toys, and so on.

A First Amendment that only protects non-controversial speech, be it commercial, political or otherwise, is toothless protection for all speech.

We anticipate that the advertising provisions will be challenged in the courts.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any comments or questions.
