    Member Profile: Sean Campbell

      Company: SKAR ADVERTISING
Position: Account Manager and Program Coordinator

How long have you been a member of AAF Omaha?
I have been a member of AAFO since 2009.
Why did you become a member of AAF Omaha? Greg Ahrens, co-creative director at SKAR and former AAFO President, cornered me one day and made me sign the membership form before I could have a lunch break. OK, the truth is I was looking for more ways to get involved in the local ad industry so I thought AAFO would be a good place to start.
What is your favorite member benefit? My favorite member benefit is being on Greg Ahrens' good side, most of the time.  And I enjoy taking part in great local ad events, such as Meet the Pros, where I get to meet and learn from other area professionals and give back to the students.
If you were a candy, what kind would you be? Sour Patch Kids. It's a classic and my favorite candy, which just so happened to be introduced to the U.S. the same year I was, 1985.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live? I know this is not a sexy answer, but the truth is I would live in Omaha. I like living here because of the people, atmosphere, creative scene (especially art & music) and stable economy.
If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy? I would put away money for each of my nieces' and nephews' education, buy a new home for everyone in my family, treat my friends to new cars and other toys, buy a tropical island with all-white sand and a cruise ship where all my family and friends could take vacations.  I would also invest at least half within the first week.
What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning? "Wow, my alarm is really annoying.  Why don't I buy a new radio clock alarm for my bedside?"
What do you like most about your job?The thing I like most about my job is finding strategic and innovative solutions to the new challenges I face every day.
What are some of the different jobs you have had? I have been a Little League umpire, telemarketer, cashier, energy drink promoter and warehouse guy.  I used to tell people that I was the best forklift driver this side of the Mississippi.  If you saw the amount of space I had in the warehouse to maneuver the pallets, you'd understand why.

AAF Omaha puts our members face to face with influential lawmakers and also encourages industry self-regulation as a preemptor to government intervention, when appropriate

Midwest Heart Connection Gets its Own Soup Line

Every year, the American Advertising Federation Omaha (AAF Omaha) designs and executes a pro-bono public service campaign for a nonprofit organization. In 2010, the public service committee sent out more than 150 letters to eligible organizations soliciting applicants. We received 28 applications. After carefully reviewing all requests, the committee selected Midwest Heart Connection (MHC) to receive an integrated campaign.

This year, AAF Omaha partnered with advertising students from Creighton University who, with guidance from other AAF Omaha members, functioned as the public service committee. The students, who operated under the name of Soup Line (http://soupline.org), conducted themselves like a student-run agency, with account services, media and creative departments. Students were responsible for conceiving and directing the entire campaign. The students' involvement was the focal point of the advertising campaigns class offered by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Creighton University.

The goals for the campaign were to increase awareness of MHC among the community, those that can use their services and other service-related organizations; and to increase awareness of CHD among the community, to raise awareness of the prevalence of CHD in the community and to position MHC as the pre-eminent provider of support services.

To communicate the prevalence of CHD to its external audience and to position MHC as the unique provider of CHD-related support services, billboards were designed to capture the attention of drivers and passersby, by getting them to consider the number of people afflicted by CHD in the community. To emphasize the point that CHD is more common than many people think, billboards focused on the incidence of CHD relative to the location of each billboard.

MHC's website was redesigned to establish an awareness-oriented image and message, one that would be consistent with audience touch points. Access information, a sliding panel navigation was implemented using advanced computer coding that conceptually tied to the campaign's tagline, "Make the Connection." To reinforce the look and feel of other executions, each section featured the campaign's signature "connecting" lines.

To communicate to MHC's internal audience, posters and registration cards were distributed to the cardiac units of local hospitals and to the offices of local cardiac physicians. These were intended to position MHC as the pre-eminent provider of CHD-related support services and as a loving support network for parents who are just beginning to cope with CHD.

In conjunction with campaign deliverables, two holiday themed events were undertaken: a holiday poinsettia give-away on the day after Thanksgiving at Regency Court, and a holiday luncheon fundraiser, for which club members and officers donated silent auction items such as Husker football tickets, gourmet food baskets, and tickets to local cultural events. The highlight of the luncheon was a talk given by an eighth grade student, who gave a stirring account of what it's like to live with CHD. Ms. Tiffany Mitty-Klein, a mother of a child with CHD, also spoke giving those in attendance a revealing account of how she learned about her child's disease. The proceeds of the silent auction went to MHC.

Many thanks go to Mulhall's for their kind donation of poinsettias, to Kathy McArdle of Lamar Outdoor for her assistance in securing space, and to the students of Soup Line who eagerly took on the project and offered their considerable creative skills to MHC.

University of Nebraska - Lincoln wins the AAF 9th District National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC)

UNL's AAF student chapter NSAC team won the AAF 9th District student competition in April and will be competing nationally in June.  Congratulations to all NSAC teams that participated at the district level.  This year JCPenney will be the 38th sponsor of NSAC. For almost forty years, this competition has provided college students the hands-on, practical experience necessary to be competitive in this industry.

The competition requires college chapter members to develop a 32-page marketing campaign and 20 minute presentation in response to a case study co-authored by JCPenney and AAF Academic Committee. Each student team first participates at the district level and then winning teams will advance to the national level. Student teams will pitch their campaign to a judging panel selected by the sponsor during the National Conference held in San Diego, June 2-4, 2011. Year over year, the quality of work and level of creativity surpasses the previous year and sponsors have been known to implement the ideas generated by these impressive, high-caliber student teams.

AAF currently has 15 districts and over 200 college chapters. Last year 147 college chapters competed at the district level.

JCPenney will not only sponsor NSAC this year but will also host the 2010 AAF Student Conference in Dallas, Texas on October 21-22. This event connects students with a variety of professional development opportunities and encourages them to meet and network with industry leaders and AAF alumni.

To learn more about how to start an AAF college chapter and participate in the NSAC, please visit www.aaf.org/college .

2011 Omaha AMA Pinnacle Award Winners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Omaha, Neb., April 20, 2011 - The Omaha Chapter of the American Marketing Association (Omaha AMA) recently recognized outstanding local marketing campaigns with the organization's annual Pinnacle awards.  The coveted "best in show" award, honoring the best overall campaign, was presented to Omaha Children's Museum for its "Bringing Back the Pack" integrated marketing  campaign, aimed at restoring the emotional connection people had with the animals of Richman Gordman. The effort produced not only a double-digit increase in admissions, but an amazing groundswell of support from the local media.

Segmented into three categories based on business type - large business, small business and not-for-profit organizations - three levels of awards were presented: Gold, which recognizes excellent work; Platinum, which recognizes exceptional work; and Pinnacles, which the judges consider the best work in a certain category. To ensure objective scoring, Pinnacles entries are always judged by an affiliate AMA chapter (New Orleans for 2011). Entries are evaluated not only for their creativity, but for their effectiveness.

"This year's winners represent a diverse set of advertising agencies and internal marketing communications teams," said Todd Sanning, AMA board member and 2011 Pinnacles chair. "With entries from dozens of local companies, the 63 awards presented demonstrate results-focused marketing campaigns from the talented marketing minds in our Omaha community."

Local advertising agency SKAR was the event's main sponsor, developing the "Marketing Wizard"-themed communications and awards event. Other supporting sponsors included Barnhart Press, Mail Marketing, Joe Comstock, Renze Display, Beeline & Blue, and The Great Plains Motion Picture Company.

AAFO Quote of the Month: "The creative person wants to be a know-it-all. He wants to know about all kinds of things: ancient history, 19th century mathematics, current manufacturing techniques, flower arranging and hog futures. Because he never knows when these ideas might come together to form a new idea. It may happen six minutes later or six months, or six years down the road. But he has faith that it will happen."
