Creighton
University Student
Team
AAF
Omaha has a long history of giving back to area nonprofit
organizations as part of its public service efforts. This year, AAF
Omaha partnered with advertising students from Creighton
University who, with guidance from other AAF Omaha members,
functioned as the public service committee. The students, who
operated under the name of Soup Line, conducted themselves like a
student-run agency, with account services, media and creative
departments. The agency takes its name from its Jesuit-inspired
service learning mission and from depression-era soup lines that fed
the hungry.
Students
were responsible for conceiving and directing the entire campaign
under the leadership of four seniors: Deidre Birkholt, creative
director; Kara Hanson, account services director; Joe Kruger,
account executive; and Krista Strobel, media director. The students'
involvement was the focal point of the advertising campaigns class
offered by the Department of Journalism, Media & Computing at
Creighton University. Providing the students crucial guidance were
Greg Ahrens and Jenny Dillingham of SKAR Advertising.
The
first phase of their work focused on executing an awareness campaign
for Midwest Heart Connection, a local nonprofit that assists
individuals who suffer from congenital heart disease. Soup Line
created billboards, posters, and collateral material that began to
appear in market in February.
This
fall the group will undertake the next phase of their work, a
branding campaign for the Celiac Sprue Association (CSA), a national
organization that is dedicated to helping individuals with celiac
disease and dermatitis herpetiformis (more commonly known as gluten
intolerance) through research, education and support.

Dept.
of the Interior Takes Urban Office Space from Tired to
Inspired How
Bozell Got Beautiful
Urban. Hip. Inspired. When Bozell announced its plans
to relocate from the FNB Business Park to downtown's Old Market
Lofts building, this is what it envisioned its new office space
would be.
But, as the agency would soon find out, maintaining
a consistent brand image while transitioning from clean corporate
cubicles to a gritty downtown warehouse takes a little
time.
"We had this grand vision of what the overall look
would be. We really wanted to embrace the unique vibe of the Old
Market. We're a creative agency! This is what we're about!" said Kim
Mickelsen, managing principal. "But we knew that getting to that
point was going to take some work."
Bozell's Department of
the Interior (DOI) looked to the gritty, urban feel of its new home
for inspiration. The historic former warehouse already had its share
of personality-complete with worn wooden floors, a monumentally open
space with high ceilings and exposed pipes. And the 24-inch slope
from one end of the historic wooden floor to the other was
certainly, well, distinctive.
But distinctive wasn't enough.
The space needed to become distinctively Bozell.
"Integrating
a consistent brand image to a completely different kind of space was
a really fun creative challenge for us," said Chris Tipton,
interactive designer and DOI head. "We wanted to stay true to the
building's history and the Old Market. We treated the existing
aesthetics of the building as a palette to work
from.

A
visually vacant space was converted into a display area. The old
rusty warehouse doors were opened, revealing a receded cinderblock
wall. Wood was layered over it to match the desks and pods, and then
covered with pieces of Bozell's own proud history.

In the
kitchen, furniture was rearranged, tossed and pulled in from other
areas to create a usable community space that tied the look
together.

The
cushions were one of the few items that were purchased by the team
in transforming the space. The Bozell sign, a table for the seating
area in the kitchen, and the outdoor furniture, along with other
small projects were built by DOI members
themselves.
Collectively,
these changes added up to an office that reflected Bozell's brand
while celebrating the gritty heritage of its historic new space. But
that doesn't mean the DOI is retiring.
"We're proud of the
projects we've completed to date. We feel it's really given Bozell
ownership of its new space," Tipton said. "But we have more we hope
to do. With a large open space like this, once you start to imagine
the possibilities, it's impossible to
stop." .............................................................................................................................................

Bozell Interns Rebrand Creating Captains Students
gain work experience with Husker legend Matt Davison
The 2011
summer interns at Omaha-based marketing company Bozell, will work directly with Husker
legend Matt Davison to rebrand and develop a strategic plan for his
nonprofit.
The Bozell internship program offers college
students an opportunity to gain real-life marketing experience. Each
intern will work in the departments suited to their interest and
skills. As part of the annual program, a nonprofit client is
assigned to the intern team. Throughout the summer, interns work
directly with the non-profit client. This summer, they are working
with Davison's organization, Creating Captains.
"The goal of
the program is to provide our interns with as much 'real agency'
experience as possible," said Nicole Frazier, business engagement
developer and head of the internship program. "They work on real
clients on a day-to-day basis within their departments, but the
addition of managing and running point on their own client really
allows them an experience unlike other internships."
Creating Captains is a youth sports program
designed to teach positive values and build character, both on and
off the playing field, regardless of athletic ability. Davison
created the program to share his experiences as an athlete and
leader.
The profits from Creating Captains go directly to
the Nebraska Food Bank's BackPack Program. The
BackPack Program provides food to high school students in need of
healthy meals on the weekends and is an effort to eliminate the
child hunger crisis in Nebraska.
"We want to challenge the
kids who attend our camps to be leaders in their schools and
communities," said Davison. "We believe many of the kids who attend
our camps have the ability to make a huge impact on their
peers."
The Bozell internship program is run by Frazier and
project manager Kevin Jones. The program gives interns hands-on
experience at a marketing agency and helps to build their
portfolios.
"It will be exciting to take the project from
beginning to end and see how far we can push it to achieve their
goals," said Jennifer Fisher, brand navigation intern. "It would be
great to see the program go far and be able to say I had a part in
it."
