AAF Member Profile: Matt Wilson, Account Coordinator, SKAR Advertising

1. How long have you been an AAF Omaha member?
I joined AAF Omaha in 2009 when I was selected to be on the University of Nebraska-Omaha National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) Team.

2. What is the best benefit of being a member of AAF Omaha?
From my experience in AAFO there is no greater collection of interesting creative people who view the world through a similar slightly skewed lens, as I do. It has been wonderful getting to share thoughts and ideas with some of the best minds in advertising.

3. What makes the field of advertising so intriguing?
Growing up I was always faced with the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” One week I would want to be a cowboy, the next an architect or Superman(not possible, I tried!). I wish someone would have told me that if I chose the path of advertising, I would not have to pick one profession because I would have the opportunity to work in all of them. The advertising field allows people like me to do everything when they refuse to settle on just something.

4. What is your favorite Super Bowl commercial of all time?
Volkswagen-Darth Vader

5. Professionally, who inspires you most and why?
My co-workers here at SKAR Advertising inspire me. There is so much talent and history within these walls it is hard to not be inspired in some way every day I come to work.

6. What’s the best piece of advice or lesson you have ever received?
Be polite. Shower occasionally. Eat a few times a day. Work hard. Laugh. Fights are scary. Girls dig scars. Football is not everything. Dogs are cool. Cats are not. My phone does not own me. Stay in shape. Smile. The stove is hot. Winter is cold. Golf is frustrating. Do not pet the animals at the zoo. Wear a seatbelt. Dancing is weird looking. Brush my teeth. Things are expensive. Be faithful. Slow down. Keep moving. Do what makes me happy. Go outside. Buy toilet paper. Don’t sleep the day away. Drinking can hurt the next day. Dress to impress. Water is good. Building credit is necessary. Be charming. Open doors for people. Dream. Respect others. Sunscreen, Go Red Sox. Go Broncos. Go Huskers. Sleep is good for you. Nothing good happens after 2am. Save money. Chew with my mouth closed. Love.

7. Who is your favorite author and/or book?
Book? What is a book? My favorite book is “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen.

8. What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment to date?
The day I graduated from college was my greatest accomplishment.

9. To you, life is like a ___________________
. . . zoo in a jungle.

10. Early riser or night owl?
I hate to see the sun rise but I love to watch it set.

11. What is your most memorable vacation?
I spent two unforgettable weeks in Hawaii.

12. If you could have a super power, what would it be and why?
Well, I have inherited the nickname Superman, so I’ll have what he’s having minus the whole kryptonite weakness thingy.

13. What is your favorite quote?
“Life is for the living” - Grandma

A looming proposal by ICANN the Internet Domain Registration organization is on the horizon. Basically what they are proposing is an auction of new .whatever registrations. A December 11th story in the Washington Post outlines the impact this proposal may have both Nationally and Worldwide. For $185,000 you might be able to own .BerkshireHathaway or .Coke. or .Gil…personally I don’t think .Gil is worth $185,000 but if you want it you can have it.
What’s the rush?

FOR two decades, .com, .org and some 20 other “generic top-level domain names” have served as calling cards for the vast majority of Web sites. That may change dramatically — and not for the better — if the obscure but powerful organization that manages domain names gets its way.

Starting next month, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) plans to take applications from individuals and groups interested in plunking down $185,000 a pop to buy the rights to new domain names — the words to the right of the dot. Some of these could focus on a community of businesses or services, such as .bank or .news. Others may be used to market specific brands or products, as in .Coke or .Chevy. ICANN officials say that they expect up to 500 applications to be filed between January and April when the organization opens the process; those approved would go live in 2013. ICANN believes these changes will lead to innovations that build on the already explosive growth and inventiveness of the Internet age.

Eight businesses, nonprofits and law enforcement officials take a dimmer view. “A potential disaster,” declared Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz during a congressional hearing last week. An invitation to extortion, cried a coalition of businesses. A crippling blow, warned a group of nonprofits.

Mr. Leibowitz worries that the proliferation of names will increase the incidence of fraud; ICANN’s error-riddled database of Web site and domain name owners, he testified, already makes it difficult to track down scammers. Businesses say that they will be forced to spend millions in “defensive registrations” to prevent interlopers from claiming their brand or product names; the new addresses, they say, will duplicate existing sites and cause confusion. Nonprofits say that they cannot afford the stiff fees. Representatives from these groups aired their complaints during a Senate hearing Thursday — not that lawmakers have any power to resolve the controversy.

ICANN reports to no one — a decision made when the group was created during the Clinton administration to protect Internet independence. The group has made some adjustments in response to concerns, including creation of a trademark clearinghouse and a “rapid response” process to allow legitimate rights holders to quickly knock out imposters. Officials have said that some nonprofits may be permitted to pay lower fees. Although the plan has been six years in the making, it is not ready for prime time. ICANN officials acknowledge that they are still working out some details, including certain protections for trademark holders. The Justice Department and other law enforcement agencies have expressed concerns about enforcement.

ICANN should not approve new names until enforcement and protection issues are resolved. Even then, it should approve at most a few, to allow the marketplace to absorb and weigh the changes. ICANN would be wise to move slowly; its legitimacy and Internet efficacy are at stake.

As always, if you have a topic that you would like me to discuss feel free to contact me at: gil@omahapublications.com and I will be happy to report on it for you.

The winners for the 2012 AAF Omaha Silver Medal, Ad Pro and Ad Rookie have been chosen, and all winners have been notified. All nominees were very deserving, and the selection committee had difficult decisions to make in every category, but here they are …

AAF Omaha 2012 Silver Medal Winner
Lori Meier AAF

Omaha 2012 Ad Pro Winner
Randa Zalman AAF

Omaha 2012 Ad Rookie Winner
Andrea Gourley

About the Winners

Randa Zalman
Online Strategist and Senior Account Supervisor
Redstone

Randa Zalman is the recipient of the 2012 AAF Omaha Ad Pro of the Year Award. She currently serves as the Online Strategist and Senior Account Supervisor at Redstone.

The Ad Pro of the Year award is given to an AAF Omaha member who has a distinguished track record of service in advertising including professional and community service, with particular attention to AAF Omaha service.

Zalman’s professional achievements include being a key part of the team that helped build and define Redstone’s line up of online services. In her role as Online Strategist and Senior Account Supervisor, she oversees development of all online client proposals as well as internal and external education materials. More importantly Randa helps everyone in the agency find new ways to integrate online advertising, mobile, search and social media into their client’s current marketing mix. She has earned a reputation as a knowledgeable, skilled presenter with expertise in sharing the latest trends in online advertising, mobile, search and social media. As such, she has served as speaker, panelist and webinar host for advertising, direct marketing, compliance and insurance organizations on the local, regional and national level. As Advertising Manager for Woodmen of the World, Randa was a leader in the creation and launch of their first ever branding advertising campaigns on local, regional and national platforms. She also helped provide cooperative advertising solutions and education to a Field Force of 1500.

Zalman served on AAF Omaha’s Board of Directors from 2005-2010. She was the After Hours Co-Chair from 2005-2006 and made major contributions as the Meet the Pros Co-Chair from 2007-2010. Before serving on the board, Zalman served on the Meet the Pros committee.

Other volunteer contributions include serving on the MADMA Board of Directors from 2003-2010 where she served as President from 2005-2006. She was on the YWCA Board of Directors from 2005-2007, served on the Insurance Advertising Compliance Association Board of Directors from 2007-2010 and currently serves on a committee dedicated to Social Media for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. She also has served as the PR Chair since 2010 for Help Portrait, a national non-profit movement that takes professional portraits of those who are homeless or in need, for free; and she founded Social Media Saturdays in 2010. This group helps others become more familiar with the technology and the opportunities that the online environment can provide. Activities include helping the elderly get and navigate their Facebook profiles so they can talk with their kids and grandkids. Sometimes it comes in the form of developing online fundraising strategies for non-profits that don’t have the resources to add one more thing to their budget.

Zalman will be presented with the Ad Pro of the Year Award on Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at the Meet The Pros luncheon at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs.
