AAF Member Profile: Shannon Johnson, Creative Director, Ervin & Smith

1. How long have you been an AAF Omaha member?
I joined AAF Omaha in November of 2008.

2. What is the best benefit of being a member of AAF Omaha?
The best part about being a member is the people that I meet and the fun events that I can attend. It's a great way to make connections and network.

3. What do you enjoy most about the “Meet the Pros” event? Why should students attend?
The Meet the Pros event connects students with advertising professionals – sharing tips to land a job, as well as insights on what to expect once they enter the advertising industry. Students should jump at this opportunity, as there's no other time that they have access to this many qualified professionals. What I find most exciting about being a Co-Chair for Meet the Pros is working with the many connections I've made in our industry when generating the list of speakers, panelists and portfolio reviewers.

4. What makes the field of advertising so intriguing?
I find advertising and generating ideas interesting because it's dependent on the individual people involved. You can pair up two people together and get a unique result that's completely different than if you paired up two different people. There is no scientific formula to create good advertising – it truly is the people who make great ideas come to life. And that's powerful.

5. What is your favorite Super Bowl commercial of all time?
Reebok's Terry Tate Super Bowl commercial is my personal favorite. I laugh every time I see it!

6. Professionally, who inspires you most and why?
My personal favorite creative speaker is Stefan Mumaw, who happens to be the keynote lunch speaker at Meet the Pros on February 14th. Author of Caffeine for the Creative Mind and Chasing the Monster Idea, Stefan is engaging, intelligent and has a firm grasp on what makes the creative mind tick. I highly recommend other professionals attend his presentation, as well! Sign up here!

7. What’s the best piece of advice or lesson you have ever received?
To give my best, and not my most. Being someone that struggles at times to achieve a work/life balance… this is something that I often have to remind myself of. Often times, when I am giving my most, I am not giving my best.

8. Who is your favorite author and/or book?
Cy Wakeman's book Reality-Based Leadership: Ditch the Drama, Restore Sanity to the Workplace, and Turn Excuses into Results is a personal favorite.

9. What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment to date?
Becoming a Creative Director at Ervin & Smith!

10. What is your most memorable vacation?
Several years ago, I took a trip to Portugal and met up with all my former housemates from when I studied in Ireland during college. With friends coming from 4 different countries – we rented a house, and caught up on all the life that we experienced over the 5 years that we had been apart. Portugal was one of the most unique places I have ever been – with having the ocean, huge cliffs, and mountains, all in the same place. Great company and a great location. What more could I want?

11. If you could have a super power, what would it be and why?
Cloning. I'd like to clone many of my team members… as they continue to impress me daily.

12. What is your favorite quote?
"Ideas are the real currency in our business. Without a good idea, all the artistic proficiency in the world is just window dressing." Mike Dietz, Slappy Pictures.

Well, Happy New Year everyone! With state and local elections looming and no clear candidates in some corners, this should turn out to be an interesting race. With the GOP having more national and state opportunistics than the Kentucky Derby it is anyone’s guess who will win the race -- may be a photo finish!

As we speak I am working on organizing our Legislative Day in Lincoln. Since holding it at Billy’s, I think we have been able to attract more Legislators than in other locations, maybe even a surprise guest or two this year.

I thought the following article might be of interest to many of you as the year gets started:

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 20, 2012 – The Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA), a coalition of the nation’s leading media and marketing trade associations, today announced the launch of the ‘Your AdChoices’ public education campaign designed to inform consumers about interest-based advertising and how to take greater control of their online privacy.

Created pro bono by the Salt Lake City office of MRM, a McCann Worldgroup company and 4A’s member, the ‘Your AdChoices’ campaign builds upon the DAA’s two-and-a-half year effort to develop and implement cross-industry best practices and effective solutions for the collection and use of data through its Advertising Option Icon.

“With widespread industry adoption of the DAA’s Self-Regulatory Principles, the DAA remains committed to informing consumers about interest-based advertising, online data collection and use, and the simple way they can exercise control over their web viewing data,” said Peter Kosmala, managing director, Digital Advertising Alliance. “This highly creative public education campaign is an important step in that ongoing process.”

“Working alongside policymakers, the DAA -- from the outset -- committed to create a consumer education program,” said Nancy Hill, CEO, 4A’s. “Today, with the creative genius of MRM and McCann’s deep insights about online privacy, we are fulfilling that promise and launching a campaign that connects with consumers, educates them about interest-based advertising and gives them effective choices.” Infused with elements of entertainment and humor, the initial stage of this multi-phase online campaign includes banner advertising that directs consumers to the DAA’s Icon and links to a new, information website, www.youradchoices.com, which features three educational videos and a user-friendly consumer choice mechanism. The consumer choice page enables consumers to opt out of interest-based advertising from the companies that participate in the DAA’s Self-Regulatory Program.

“It’s incumbent upon our industry to build trust and respect amongst consumers regarding the brands we work for, especially with regard to interest-based advertising,” said Lori Feld, managing director of MRM SLC. “In our global McCann study, ‘Truth About Privacy,’ published last year, consumers clearly defined the value exchange and control they expect.”

Feld added, “Building meaningful relationships with consumers has immense value for brands. In this campaign we chose to personify banner advertising, infusing banner ads with a human desire to build relationships with the ‘right’ people. We feel this campaign is fun and charming, and avoids industry jargon that reinforces fear.”

Since it launched in 2010, the DAA’s Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising has achieved industry-wide adoption. More than 400 companies now participate, including top-20 global advertisers American Express, AT&T, Disney, General Motors, Kraft Foods, Microsoft and Walmart. The Advertising Option Icon is now being served in more than 900 billion ad impressions per month. More than 60,000 unique visitors visit the DAA’s current website, www.aboutads.info, each week.

About The DAA Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising ?
The DAA Self-Regulatory Program for Online Behavioral Advertising was launched in 2010 by the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA), a consortium of the nation's largest media and marketing associations including the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s), the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI). These associations and their thousands of members are committed to developing effective self-regulatory solutions to consumer choice in online behavioral advertising (OBA). Based on seven “Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising” proposed by the Federal Trade Commission, the DAA program is designed to give consumers enhanced control over the collection and use of data regarding their Internet viewing for OBA purposes. To learn more about the DAA Program, please visit www.aboutads.info.

As always, if you have a topic that you would like me to discuss feel free to contact me at: gil@omahapublications.com and I will be happy to report on it for you.

AAF Omaha 2012 Silver Medal Winner
Lori Meier

AAF Omaha 2012 Ad Pro Winner
Randa Zalman

AAF Omaha 2012 Ad Rookie Winner
Andrea Gourley

About the Winners

Randa Zalman
Online Strategist and Senior Account Supervisor
Redstone

Randa Zalman is the recipient of the 2012 AAF Omaha Ad Pro of the Year Award. She currently serves as the Online Strategist and Senior Account Supervisor at Redstone.

The Ad Pro of the Year award is given to an AAF Omaha member who has a distinguished track record of service in advertising including professional and community service, with particular attention to AAF Omaha service.

Zalman’s professional achievements include being a key part of the team that helped build and define Redstone’s line up of online services. In her role as Online Strategist and Senior Account Supervisor, she oversees development of all online client proposals as well as internal and external education materials. More importantly Randa helps everyone in the agency find new ways to integrate online advertising, mobile, search and social media into their client’s current marketing mix. She has earned a reputation as a knowledgeable, skilled presenter with expertise in sharing the latest trends in online advertising, mobile, search and social media. As such, she has served as speaker, panelist and webinar host for advertising, direct marketing, compliance and insurance organizations on the local, regional and national level. As Advertising Manager for Woodmen of the World, Randa was a leader in the creation and launch of their first ever branding advertising campaigns on local, regional and national platforms. She also helped provide cooperative advertising solutions and education to a Field Force of 1500.

Zalman served on AAF Omaha’s Board of Directors from 2005-2010. She was the After Hours Co-Chair from 2005-2006 and made major contributions as the Meet the Pros Co-Chair from 2007-2010. Before serving on the board, Zalman served on the Meet the Pros committee.

Other volunteer contributions include serving on the MADMA Board of Directors from 2003-2010 where she served as President from 2005-2006. She was on the YWCA Board of Directors from 2005-2007, served on the Insurance Advertising Compliance Association Board of Directors from 2007-2010 and currently serves on a committee dedicated to Social Media for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. She also has served as the PR Chair since 2010 for Help Portrait, a national non-profit movement that takes professional portraits of those who are homeless or in need, for free; and she founded Social Media Saturdays in 2010. This group helps others become more familiar with the technology and the opportunities that the online environment can provide. Activities include helping the elderly get and navigate their Facebook profiles so they can talk with their kids and grandkids. Sometimes it comes in the form of developing online fundraising strategies for non-profits that don’t have the resources to add one more thing to their budget.

Zalman will be presented with the Ad Pro of the Year Award on Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at the Meet The Pros luncheon at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs.
