Member Profile: Bethany Ragan, Account Executive Lamar Outdoor Advertising

1. How long have you been an AAF Omaha member?
Since 2010.I know, I know, such the "rookie" status!

2. What do you like best about being a member of AAF Omaha?
All the opportunities and great people involved! You really get to learn so much from everyone who is a part of AAF Omaha and have so many opportunities to contribute back to the organization and the community.

3. What initially attracted you to the field of advertising?
A class back in high school that introduced us to the "greats" of advertising. Leo Burnett's story stuck with me. In addition to that, it was the only career that I could picture myself in that would allow me to mix my creative side and business savvy.

4. What is the best vacation you have ever had?
It was a mix of vacation and education. I had the opportunity to study abroad in Seville, Spain for seven weeks. The mix of culture, experience and knowledge that that experience brought may never be able to be replaced.

5. If you could have a super power, what would it be and why?
I had to look up a list of super powers in order to answer this question! I would want the power of Omnilingualism - the ability to automatically understand all verbal and non-verbal communication. This would definitely help in any traveling business setting!

6. Who is your favorite author and/or book?
It's really hard to choose just one author and/or one book! The last book I read was The
Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Too many people raved about how great of a book it was, even for a young adult categorized book, so I had to read it!

7. What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment to date?
Hmmm..not settling. This has allowed me to constantly push myself to keep learning and keep improving my skills.

8. Chocolate or Vanilla?
Vanilla, but if we're getting into specifics, Vanilla Bean!

Welcome to the first of a monthly column in the AAFO Newsletter. Our purpose here is to keep AFFO membership abreast of issues affecting the advertising industry. Some may be state or local issues, some might be national. I look forward to any comments you may have or suggestions on what you would like to read.

Since Congress is apparently on vacation this month after their tough battle with the budget ceiling, not much is going on in August. Some pending legislation, when they return, is The Preliminary Nutrition Principles for Food Marketed to Children by the IWG. Paraphrasing from an article by Clark Rector-Executive Vice President-Government Affairs American Advertising Federation:

"In 2009, Congress directed an Interagency Working Group (IWG) -comprised of the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Center for Disease Control - to conduct a study of food marketed to children and teens and to make recommendations to Congress. Instead of completing that study and report, the Interagency Working Group (IWG) has proposed sweeping restrictions of food marketing that would curtail marketing of thousands of healthy food products, force dramatic changes to food packaging, undermine financial support for television shows and charitable organizations, and radically change the way consumers receive information about food.

While the agencies claim the guidelines are voluntary, they would in fact be treated as de facto nutrition and advertising standards. The guidelines are so restrictive that only 12 of the 100 most consumed foods in the U.S. could be advertised to children under the age of 18. The marketing standards are so strict that any program with a viewership of 20 percent or more of adolescents between 12 and 17 would be off limits.

The agencies have done no cost/benefit analysis and released the restrictions even though there is no evidence of any causal link between advertising and childhood obesity".

Mr. Rector has initiated a letter campaign to Health and Human Service Secretary Sebelius, Ag Secretary Vilsack, and FTC Chairman Leibowitz asking AAF Clubs to support an effort to withdraw the legislation.

In effect pointing out that the report by the IWG is flawed and that it would in no way would the recommended changes contribute to long-term changes in eating behaviors.

This is certainly an issue we will be watching closely.

University of Oklahoma Advertising Industry Research Project

Associate Professor Daniel Ng at the Gaylord College of JMC and Co-advisor of OU Ad Club (AAF student chapter) at the University of Oklahoma has been conducting a small research project on an emerging yet evolving phenomenon in the advertising industry. In specific, it deals with the changes of account management in the fast-paced marketing communication agencies' environment. This research project is still ongoing and Professor Ng is still collecting results from a larger pool of samples.

The preliminary indication of the research results has been very exciting, and has brought some attention as well as recognition in the academic arena. Professor Ng has been invited as one of the guest panelists for the National Conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC-Ad Division) in mid-August.

The advertising industry has evolved into a highly competitive environment where the demand for performance and service is endless. As change within the marketplace transpires and the need for ingenious campaign to reach a fragmented audience trends upward, agencies are forced to reevaluate how they are structured from the inside. This exploratory research attempts to find current perspective toward the evolution of account management in advertising agencies settings as well as the marketing communication arena. Intriguing results are found by using personal interviews with area professionals. Verbatim collected from advertising practitioners through phone interviews signified interesting indications.
Professor Ng is looking for an opportunity to share some of the knowledge (top-line results) of his research with advertising executives in our area. If you are interested in this study please contact Associated Professor Daniel Ng.
