OFA Hosts 15th Annual Nebraska ADDY Awards

On Saturday night, Feb. 2, 2008, over 430 advertising professionals and college students attended the 15th Annual Nebraska ADDY Awards at the Hilton Omaha. Recognizing the most creative advertising developed in the state during 2007, the theme of the show was “Rack Your Brain” and it was “sponsored” by a fictional creative supplement drink called MindKick. This year’s competition broke records with over 1,100 advertisements being entered for consideration.

Lincoln youth branding agency, Archrival, won the Best of Show award for a poster campaign developed for Nomad Lounge in Omaha. In the Student Best of Show category, Eric Nyffeler from the University of Nebraska at Kearney won for a poster campaign designed for Hydra Black Powder Fireworks.

The event also included presentations by the Omaha Federation of Advertising and the Advertising Federation of Lincoln of each organization’s respective Silver Medal lifetime achievement award. The OFA Silver Medal was given to Omaha World-Herald Chairman John Gottschalk. The Advertising Federation of Lincoln awarded its Silver Medal trophy to Kay Wunderlich, national sales manager of KLKN-TV.

Conducted annually by the American Advertising Federation, the local ADDY Awards is the first of a three-tier national competition. Concurrently, across the country, local winners compete against other winners in one of 14 District competitions. The District winners are then forwarded to the National ADDY Awards.

ADDY guests view the hundreds of entries on display.

Children’s Respite Care Center poster

The OFA has teamed up with Children’s Respite Care Center to provide an advertising campaign.

The campaign concept is: Together we can do anything.

This means, regardless of abilities or challenges, a child is innately imaginative, creative, and full of wonder. A smile or a laugh is a universally enjoyed experience, and for a child to smile or laugh brings a real sense of satisfaction.

Parents, caregivers, teachers and coaches all share a responsibility to provide the proper environment and encouragement that allows children to reach their highest goals. For one child, that’s reaching the Olympic podium or graduating at the top of their class. For another, it’s completing the simple daily tasks we often take for granted. The sense of accomplishment for either child is genuine and meaningful.

Children see their goals much differently than adults. They’re called wishes. They imagine things in much grander fashions. They don’t yet think about “Plan B,” or prioritizing their action item lists. That’s for grownups. For children, the world is a fantastic place, and if asked to choose between handwriting exercises or taking a balloon ride – the choice is clear.

Achieving that sense of accomplishment, reaching the goals that will put a smile on a child’s face, and filling them with a sense of value and contribution is Children’s Respite Care Center’s mission. “Together we can do anything” applies to the relationship between child and parent, child and caregiver, caregiver and parent. It is the support we give each other and the bond we build within the group that ultimately benefits our children.

Interactive 2.0: The emerging trend for truly interactive brand experiences
Presenter: Joe Olsen, President/CEO and co-founder of Phenomblue

While media-inclusive web sites have shaped the landscape of new and emerging web technologies over the past few years, 2007 was a breakout year for delivering true interactive experiences with media-driven content.

Bridging the gap between web and new media, the high-end interactive branding experience is becoming more the norm than the exception. The fact is, clients are asking for it and those that are not, will be soon. Nearly all brands across popular industries are utilizing 3D, animation and video delivery to give the consumer a more immersive experience with products and marketing concepts. In this session, we’ll walk through some creative examples and the behind-the-scenes strategic plans driving this change.

We’ll also look at the design industry’s response to demand and how to plan for future growth utilizing these technologies with clients and future projects.

Joe Olsen is the President/CEO and co-founder of Phenomblue (www.phenomblue.com), a digital design and technology collective focused on building brands through immersive interactive experiences. With offices in the U.S. and Canada, Phenomblue’s clients include some of the biggest advertising and marketing agencies in the world, providing websites, digital applications, 3D modeling and animation, interactive presentations, content management tools and other strategic technology services. As president of Phenomblue, he oversees business operations, sales and strategic creative development.

Since 1997, Joe has been a leading innovator in the interactive design and development community. Prior to Phenomblue, he was a top consultant in the software development field providing Microsoft and Adobe solutions to large and mid-size businesses. As a community leader, Joe co-founded the International .NET Association (www.ineta.org) which serves over 1.5 million registered users worldwide. Joe is also the co-founder and President of the Heartland Developers Network, responsible for running the annual Heartland Developers Conference (www.heartlanddc.com), the largest independent Microsoft development conference in the United States.

The America Advertising Federation Comments
on FTC Green Marketing Guides

The Federal Trade Commission is currently undertaking a regulatory review of its environmental marketing guidelines, or “Green Guides.” The Guides were last updated in 1998.

The AAF has joined with AAAA and ANA to weigh in on the issue. Our comments urge the FTC to use caution and move slowly in any revision of the guides. We cite three primary reasons for caution:

  • The existing Green Guides, as well as existing FTC requirements for the truth and substantiation of advertising claims are effective in ensuring the truth and accuracy of environmental claims;
  • The advertising industry's self-regulatory standards requiring that claims be truthful and substantiated apply to environmental advertising claims; and
  • Revising the Guides could have a chilling effect on environmental advertising claims by creating confusion or uncertainty as to advertising requirements.

You can get a copy of our comments here. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any comments or questions.

..............................................................................................................................................

From the AAF

FCC Majority Approves Product Placement Examination

Three of five commissioners at the Federal Communications Commission have signed a letter “on circulation” to initiate a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on embedded advertising in television broadcasts. All five commissioners must sign the letter in order to bypass a Notice of Proposed Inquiry and go directly to rulemaking. Since the agency has not established any consumer harm, the AAF believes a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking is unnecessary. We have sent a joint letter to the FCC urging they instead initiate a Notice of Proposed Inquiry to examine the issue. A copy of the letter is available here.

Rep. Dingell Criticizes DTV Education Budget

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell, D-Mich., has criticized the $20 million allocated in President Bush’s proposed 2009 budget for digital television transition education as insufficient. In a statement, Dingell said that “Television is the primary means by which the public receives news concerning public safety and national security, so public awareness of the digital television transition is critical. If we are truly concerned about the safety and security of our nation, we should not be attempting this transition on the cheap.” The House Telecommunications and the Internet Subcommittee will hold a hearing next week on the status of education efforts. The final switch from analog to digital television is scheduled for February 17, 2009.

FTC Fines Marketer for Violating CAN-SPAM

Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., have reiterated their intent to pass legislation that would expand the Food and Drug Administration’s authority over direct-to-consumer ads for drug products sold over the counter, including the possibility of reviewing ads before they air. The Nonprescription Drug Modernization Act of 2007 (S. 2311 and H.R. 4083) was introduced in November but no hearings have been held.

FTC Announces Mobile Marketing Town Hall Meeting

On February 14, the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee will hold a hearing on the status of government and industry efforts to prepare the public for the 2009 analog to digital television transition. Additionally, the House Energy and Commerce Committee Telecommunications and the Internet Subcommittee will hold its own digital television transition hearing on February 13.
