As a brand architect for Target and now OfficeMax, Bob will demonstrate how building loveable brands, often without big budgets, is truly possible. In adverse times it’s an even greater challenge to find the true opportunities, but Bob has shown that it’s not impossible. In fact, his mantra “Don’t make ads, make news!” has even greater meaning than ever before.

ART & COPY is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration.Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising’s “creative revolution” of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for “Just Do It,” “I Love NY,” “Where’s the Beef?,” “Got Milk,” “Think Different,” and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them. Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.

Disney has a large consumer marketing division that speaks directly to consumers, but the work of Travel Industry Marketing is either business to business (B2B), or business to business to consumer (B2B2C). Although many of their materials do end up in the hands of a consumer, none of them ever reach the consumer directly – they are all obtained through a intermediary. Balinda DeSantis and Maira Byers will share some of their experiences in creating and modifying materials that align with the Disney consumer marketing strategies, while still being relevant to the Travel Industry Marketing distribution channel.

For well over half a century, people have been brought together by the power of television. From The Dick Van Dyke Show, Happy Days and M.A.S.H., to Dancing with the Stars, LOST and Grey’s Anatomy, TV not only offers an escape from the everyday, but also plays an important role in shaping trends and impacting pop culture. But where and how does it all start? Without innovative, integrated marketing plans to help spread the word, today’s hits may have amounted to nothing more than one season memories. Jenny Whitlock, Director, Marketing Strategy Research at ABC, will share insights into what it takes to break through in a competitive landscape and the importance of understanding and embracing emerging technology for your marketing initiatives.

The First Amendment, Academic Freedom and an Unrepentant Terrorist

Nothing is more fundamental and unassailable about being American than our First Amendment right to free speech. Nothing is more true about American politics than that public figures are ‘fair game’ in the court of public opinion. Nothing about American public universities is more true than that they are, and must be, committed to open expression of ideas, at the same time they are glass houses, open to ongoing public and media scrutiny. What happens when free speech and politics intersect during a hotly-contested presidential campaign and pose new public relations challenges for a public university?
Meg Lauerman, Director of University Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will discuss the forces in play and the controversy surrounding the scheduled, but canceled, visit to the UNL campus of Bill Ayers, a Vietnam War protester prominently featured in the presidential campaign.

Bio:
Meg Lauerman, director of University Communications since 2001, believes that the talent on the University Communications team is second to none in the nation’s top research universities, and stacks up as dynamic and innovative when compared with any communications firm in the nation. She also believes that strategic creativity in communications can and does come from all areas of the institution, and that job title has no bearing on being able to make important contributions in moving the university ahead.

Lauerman’s career “priors” include: Assistant Professor of Advertising, UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications; State Farm Insurance Co., media specialist for a four-state area; Nebraska Math & Science Initiative, communications director; Lincoln Public Schools, communications director; Nebraska ETV, senior producer; Visiting Assistant Professor of Broadcasting, UNL; Producer/writer, KOLN-TV news.

Believing that community service is an important part of life, Lauerman recently has served on the board of United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County, the Nebraska Humanities Foundation board, the Friends of Ak-Sar-Ben board, and the funeral care committee of First-Plymouth Church. She was named 2006 Public Relations Professional of the Year by the Nebraska Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Reading, golfing, biking, knitting, painting and spending time with family and friends are her favorite activities.

Corporate social responsibility seems to be the buzzword of the 21st century. Companies are realizing that it’s essential they use their power for good. In fact, consumers are demanding they do. And while a brand’s commitment to their community is ideal, executives are also under pressure to maintain a healthy bottom line in a competitive business environment. Research shows that when a brand partners with a cause in a meaningful way, consumers will become more loyal, drive positive sales and have a higher brand affinity. Jennifer Cawley, Account Director at Barkley and part of the agency’s Cause Branding Team, will share tactical advice on how to execute a successful cause platform, as well as share new research on how moms in particular feel about cause branding.

Jennifer Cawley has more than ten years experience guiding some of the most successful cause campaigns in the U.S. She has directed work for the March of Dimes, Lee Jeans, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Breast Cancer 3-Day, and L’Oreal. She is an expert in cause branding best practices as well as progressive new media applications related to cause branding’s specific consumer outreach.

The Omaha Federation of Advertising (OFA) has selected the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council of Greater Omaha (DVCC) as its public service recipient for 2009.

“This year’s OFA Public Service Committee will be producing a highly effective public awareness campaign to promote essential prevention, intervention, and treatment techniques for assisting individuals, area organizations and agencies dedicated to serving those effected by and at greatest risk of domestic violence (DV).” said James Taylor, OFA public service committee chair.

Karen Hadley, DVCC Executive Director said, “We’re looking forward to working with the OFA to create an ad campaign that will serve as a powerful Call to Action to create awareness about the inexcusable acts of violence that take a tremendous toll on families. We are keenly aware that many victims live in fear and silence every day. DV effects people from all walks of life and knows no boundaries. The DVCC is truly excited to work with the OFA to raise awareness and give hope to those in need of services and support.”

The OFA will help DVCC by providing a pro-bono advertising campaign, which in the past has had an average worth of $300,000 thanks to the support of area advertising agencies and vendors. The campaign is currently under development and is slated to kick off in May 2009 and run through December 2009. Past public service projects recipients include, Project Relate, The Shaken Baby Task Force, The Hope Center, The Ollie Webb Center, Parents United, Youth Emergency Services, the Aidan O’Neil Foundation for the Prevention of Childhood Cancer, Partners for Meth Prevention and Children’s Respite Care Center.

From the new matures to the millennium generation, our American generations are distinctly different from one another. Lifestyle trends and preferences lend each a definite flavor. Not only are they different from one another, they are unlike generations of prior years. For example, no one would argue that today’s teenagers are nothing like teens of the 1950s. This presentation answers the critical questions: Who makes up our generations and what are their primary values? Which generations are the most influential and lucrative? How can you build your promotional campaigns to secure the best response from your specific markets? This presentation gives you insightful information to use in designing promotions that capture the attention of each generation you must reach.

Susan Saurage-Altenloh’s 20+ years of research experience include facilitating more than 1,600 focus groups, completing hundreds of quantitative surveys, conducting hundreds of in-depth interviews, as well as securing an enviable reputation in her field. She’s known for finding and delivering the “big ideas” for workable, successful marketing strategies. Clients look to her for answers about American consumers.

Her firm Saurage Research, Inc. – which stays on the early adoption curve of new techniques and methodologies – has won several national and regional awards for its creative and unique research approaches to securing critical information for marketing and strategic planning. Susan’s qualitative experience is exceptionally diverse with an emphasis in healthcare, industrial/manufacturing, B2B, C-level executives, energy, professional services, banking, and sensitive issues.

Susan gathers actionable data for a client list that includes large manufacturers and refineries, nationally known medical facilities, prominent financial institutions, municipal and national governmental agencies, and advertising/marketing firms. The most notable ones – AIG American General, Tenet, Conoco, Cameron, the EPA, HP/Compaq, Chicago Board of Trade, BP, Exxon, Dow, Siemens, MD Anderson Cancer Center and McDonald’s – include several Fortune 500 companies.

In addition to being active in the American Advertising Federation (Governor of the Tenth District; past president of AAF-Houston), American Marketing Association (past president of Houston chapter), Marketing Research Association, and Qualitative Research Consultants Association (Technology Chair, Webmaster), Susan has earned various awards.

Susan graduated Magna Cum Laude from HBU, earning her degree in Business Administration and Management. She is a graduate of the MBA program at University of Texas at Austin – one of the top 10 business schools in the country. Before establishing Saurage Research, Susan served as vice-president of a large southeastern region research firm.

Susan has authored several articles appearing in national and regional business publications including Marketing News, Quirk’s Marketing Research Review, Enterprising Women, Houston Business Journal, DBA Houston and TheModerator.net. She regularly appears on television as an expert in market information and research trends. And, because she understands the intricacies and needs of a variety of industries, she is in constant demand as a speaker for advertising, marketing and healthcare groups around the country.

Ironically, the idea of starting the ad agency that carries his name wasn’t Mike’s. It came from a couple of clients cast adrift when the agency he worked at as an art director imploded. Not the first time Mike has listened to clients. And certainly not the last.

Thirteen years later, Sukle Advertising & Design has achieved an enviable track record of helping clients achieve impressive results. Brands like Carter’s and Noodles & Company. Social causes like Denver Water, the
National Sports Center for the Disabled, The Arc of Colorado and the Wyoming Department of Health. Each have benefited greatly from Mike’s sweat and passion for their business.

His work has won virtually every award given in the industry. It has been featured in Communication Arts Advertising and Design Annual, the One Show, Graphis, Print Regional Design Annual, Archive Magazine, Creativity, the Obies, the Clios, the National ADDY Awards, the Chronicle of Philanthropy and on ABC’s “The World’s Best TV Commercials You’ve Probably Never Seen.” He has won Best of Show three times at the Denver Advertising Federation Ad Show.

But any chance at gaining a swelled head was dashed the day after the first Best of Show when a letter came addressed to “Suckie Advertising.”

All of our seminars, breakouts, keynotes, round-tables and one-on-ones are hosted by real, working professionals. This way you know you’re getting a real-life picture of what it’s like to work in one of the most exciting industries in one of the fastest-growing markets in the country. Click here to register »

Why is a Membership Encouraged?

With the pricing increase and the state of the economy, I’m sure the new pricing structure came with a little sticker shock. Our intention in packaging a student membership along with the Meet the Pros registration is to emphasis the importance of networking and staying aware of industry happenings especially in this instable economy. This is a scary time for our industry. Having a student membership is an important first step for students to be proactive in their advertising future. Students can take advantage of a lower price in attending Meet the Pros and they can also open the door to other opportunities such as educational luncheons, networking opportunities, scholarship information and job/internship postings. These experiences are invaluable as a newcomer to the industry scene.

Lodging Information

A block of rooms have been reserved February 7 and 8 at the Country Inn & Suites, a hotel located next to the Mid-America Center. Rooms with double beds are $89.99 + tax. There is a maximum of four people per room. The hotel will hold rooms at the $89.99 rate until January 30.

Most Important Message of All

We can remember what it was like being a cash-strapped college student hoping to break into the industry and make a name for ourselves.
This presentation gives an overview of the size of this market, how it has grown and its impact on the overall U.S. market and marketers. The presentation will provide a snapshot on how the Hispanic market IS NOT one homogenous group rather comprised of many sub-groups who are U.S. born and foreign born. One thing that will be stressed is the role of language and culture as marketers and companies deal with Latinos. The role of language is important but the cultural relevance is even more so. If time permits, a case study will be presented regarding a well-known U.S. general market product category and what U.S. Latinos’ attitudes and opinions were toward it.
